Tan Care
Here are some pre-tan tips to help you achieve the best results for your spray tan:
- Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate your skin 24 hours before your spray tan to remove dead skin cells. Focus on areas like elbows, knees, and ankles, where tan can build up unevenly. Avoid exfoliating right before your spray tan, as it can make your skin too smooth for the product to adhere properly.
- Shave or Wax: If you plan to shave or wax, do so at least 24 hours before your spray tan. This helps avoid irritation and allows your pores time to close.
- Avoid Moisturizers: Don’t apply moisturizers, lotions, or oils on the day of your spray tan. These products can create a barrier, preventing the tan from developing evenly.
- Wear Loose, Dark Clothing: On the day of your tan, wear loose-fitting clothes to prevent rubbing the tan off. Dark clothing is best as the solution can sometimes transfer to fabrics.
- Clean Skin: Make sure your skin is clean and dry. Don’t wear any makeup, deodorant, or perfume, as these can interfere with the tan's absorption and lead to streaks.
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your spray tan. Well-hydrated skin will result in a more even and longer-lasting tan.
- Nail Care: If you are wanting/needing to get manicure and/or pedicure make sure to do this 24 hours before your spray tan.
Following these steps will help ensure you get a smooth, even, and long-lasting spray tan!
On the day of your spray tan, here are some essential steps to follow to ensure the best possible outcome:
1. Shower and Exfoliate (if you haven’t already)
- If you didn’t exfoliate the day before, do so gently in the morning. Avoid using oils or moisturizers when you shower. Focus on areas like elbows, knees, and ankles to prevent uneven tan buildup.
2. Avoid Skincare Products
- No lotions, deodorants, makeup, or perfumes on your skin. These can create a barrier that prevents the spray tan from absorbing properly. Make sure your skin is clean and dry.
3. Wear Loose, Dark Clothing
- Opt for loose-fitting clothes (like a big T-shirt and sweatpants) to avoid any rubbing or transferring of the tan. Dark clothing is best, as the spray tan can sometimes stain fabrics.
4. Prepare for the Tan
- Hair: If you have long hair, tie it back away from your face and shoulders.
5. Hydrate
- Drink plenty of water leading up to your appointment, as hydrated skin absorbs the tan better and results in a more even finish.
6. Arrive Clean
- Make sure you're on time and have showered, shaved (if necessary), and are free of any products on your skin.
7. Avoid Any Excessive Sweating
- Try not to do anything that will make you sweat right before your tan, as sweat can interfere with the application process and may cause streaking.
Following these steps will give your spray tan the best chance to develop smoothly and last longer
After your spray tan, follow these tips to ensure the best results and to help your tan last longer:
1. Don’t Shower Immediately
- Wait 2–8 hours (depending on the product used) before showering. Some solutions may be left on for a shorter or longer period, so check with your technician. During this time, avoid sweating, swimming, or getting wet.
2. Avoid Touching Your Skin
- No rubbing or touching your skin during the first few hours after your spray tan. Your skin will be absorbing the color, and friction can cause streaks or uneven results.
3. Wear Loose, Dark Clothing
- After your tan, wear loose, dark clothing to avoid rubbing the tan off or staining your clothes. Tight clothing may also cause the tan to streak or fade unevenly.
4. Shower Gently
- When you do shower, use lukewarm water (not hot), and avoid scrubbing your skin. Gently rinse off any excess bronzer from the tan solution, but don’t use loofahs or exfoliating products right away.
5. Moisturize Daily
- Keep your skin moisturized to prolong the life of your tan. Use a non-oily moisturizer daily to prevent your skin from drying out. Dry skin can cause the tan to fade unevenly.
6. Avoid Exfoliation for the First Few Days
- Don’t exfoliate your skin for at least 3–4 days post-tan to allow the color to settle and last longer. After that, continue with gentle exfoliation to maintain an even tan.
7. Avoid Sweating
- For the first 24 hours, avoid heavy exercise or any activities that could cause sweating, as sweat can break down the tan and cause streaks.
8. Stay Hydrated
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Hydrated skin holds the tan better and can help it last longer.
9. Avoid Pools and Hot Tubs
- Chlorine and saltwater can break down the tan and cause it to fade prematurely, so try to avoid swimming for at least 3–5 days after your tan.
10. Use Tan-Extend Products
- Some brands offer moisturizers or sprays designed specifically to extend the life of your tan. If you're planning to maintain your tan for several days, look for these products to help even out fading.
By following these post-tan tips, your spray tan will look great and last as long as possible!
To maintain your spray tan and ensure it lasts as long as possible, follow these tips:
1. Keep Skin Hydrated
- Moisturize daily to prevent your skin from becoming dry and flaky. Opt for a hydrating, non-oily moisturizer. Dry skin can cause your tan to fade unevenly or patchy.
2. Avoid Harsh Exfoliants
- Don’t use rough scrubs, loofahs, or exfoliating brushes on your skin, as these can remove the tan prematurely. Instead, use a gentle exfoliator if needed, but wait at least 4–5 days after your spray tan before doing so.
3. Shower Gently
- Shower with lukewarm water, not hot, and avoid prolonged exposure to water. When you do shower, use a gentle, sulfate-free body wash to protect your tan. Avoid scrubbing too harshly with washcloths.
4. Limit Activities That Cause Excessive Sweating
- Activities like intense workouts, saunas, or hot tubs can cause your tan to fade faster. Try to avoid heavy sweating, particularly during the first 24–48 hours after your tan, when it's still developing.
5. Use Tan-Extending Products
- Consider using tan-extending lotions or sprays that are specifically designed to keep your tan looking fresh. These products are often formulated with ingredients that add moisture and maintain the color longer.
6. Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing
- Tight clothing or friction can cause areas of your tan to wear off more quickly. Opt for loose, comfortable clothing, especially after the first day when your tan is still developing.
7. Protect Skin from Harsh Sun Exposure
- While spray tans give you a beautiful bronzed glow, they don’t provide any sun protection. Wear sunscreen to avoid sun damage, and try not to overexpose your skin to UV rays, which can cause your tan to fade faster.
8. Avoid Shaving or Waxing Too Often
- Shaving or waxing regularly can cause your tan to fade faster, as these methods can exfoliate the skin. If you need to shave, try to do so gently and use a shaving gel that moisturizes.
9. Touch Up as Needed
- Spray tans fade naturally over time, so if you notice unevenness or fading, consider a light touch-up spray tan after a week or so, or use a gradual self-tanner to maintain your glow.
10. Stay Hydrated
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out, which can help maintain the smoothness and longevity of your tan.
By following these maintenance tips, your spray tan can stay vibrant and even for up to 7–10 days, depending on your skin type and how well you care for it.
